HOT : LIM GUANG ENG CHECKMATE! PEMUDA BN SANGGUP BELI TANAH TAMAN MANGGIS

Chua: 60% of accountants from Ktar

KUALA LUMPUR: Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman (Ktar) has produced 60% of accountants from Malaysia, said MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

The college, he added, was also a recipient of the Platinum Status Award by the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants).

One of the criteria to qualify for the prestigious award is that students must consistently achieve pass rates that exceed the rest of the world in the ACCA examination.

While Ktar would be elevated to a unversity college next year, Dr Chua gave his assurance that its School of Business Studies would continue to flourish.

Nevertheless, he said there would be some changes like consolidating its 130 programmes, continuing only selected diploma programmes and introducing university programmes.

Dr Chua said deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai has been given a month to come up with recommendations on the changes.

The changes would also make sure that Ktar and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) would complement each other and develop together, instead of competing against each other, he said in an interview at his office here.

Dr Chua noted that the two institutions were set up and run by MCA to provide quality and affordable education to Malaysians and contribute to the country's development.

Both had produced some 200,000 graduates who found jobs within six months upon graduation, he added.

Dr Chua said the college was proposed by then MCA president Tun Tan Siew Sin at the party's annual general assembly in July 1968.

Ktar, which took in its first batch of 320 students in February 1969, now has a total enrolment of 25,000 at its main campus here and branch campuses in Penang, Perak, Johor, Pahang and Sabah.

It had undergone rapid expansion at its main campus and set up branch campuses under then MCA president Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik in the 1990s, he added.

Dr Chua said the Government's ringgit-to-ringgit annual allocation for Ktar's development and administration costs since 1972 would continue, adding that RM56mil had been allocated for the purpose next year.

The allocation was needed to keep its fees affordable, he said, adding that the fees were between RM9,000 and RM10,000.

Fees at other established private colleges ranged from RM20,000 to RM40,000.

Plans were afoot to expand the main campus here to include a faculty building, students' centre and hall and vocational training building.

He said the development on Ktar's 21ha plot could proceed after the relocation of about 500 squatter families.

Dr Chua said Ktar principal Dr Tan Chik Heok has been given six months, beginning last month, to resolve the squatter issue.

Dr Tan heads a committee of academic staff which is working with Kuala Lumpur City Hall on the relocation, he added.

Hari Raya message from MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek

August 19 2012

Hari Raya message from MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek

———————————————————————————————–

On behalf of the MCA, I would like to wish all Malaysians of the Muslim faith a Happy and joyous Hari Raya Puasa.

This is the time of the year where there is an air of festivity and merriment.

The good feel factor is the result of the people-to-people understanding among Malaysians on the diverse cultures, traditions and religious beliefs.

This is what makes Malaysia unique and stand out from the rest of the world. Although the societal components of the country are made up of various origins and background, we don't see differences in the context of weakness but as cohesion of strength.

Unlike other countries which are stricken with internal strife, we should be appreciative of the harmonious environment that we have enjoyed all these years.

This is the kind of brotherhood that we all enjoy, irrespective of race or creed.

While we bask in the goodness of such an environment, we should constantly remind ourselves that we have a role to play by ensuring the prevailing peace and harmony is not compromised.

The Muhibbah spirit should be allowed to fester unimpeded in line with the 1Malaysia culture so that we can inspire the next generation of Malaysians.

Raya is not only about the open houses, the colourful "kuih muih" spread or whose beef rending is better, it is the spirit of camaraderie at a high level where Malaysians from all walks of life come together.

It is my fervent hope that while we celebrate each festivity and look forward to the next one, we must be thankful of the conducive environment for us to indulge and interact in a joyous and meaningful manner without hostility or confrontation.

What the government has put in place has worked for the well being of all Malaysians.

The slew of initiatives of the government are classic examples of the government pushing for the betterment of  the rakyat, be it the higher retirement age, minimum wage, high income nation and a better quality of life.

We should be proud that our country's economic growth this year had surpassed expectations amidst the global uncertainties.

Our growth this year would be between 4 % and 4.5% although developed countries like the United States and Britain were facing an economic downturn.

In terms of investments, Malaysia had been ranked the fifth most favoured country in Asia for foreign investors.

The next 10 years will be challenging and the road ahead will not be without obstacles and the support of the rakyat is crucial for the government to continue with its initiatives unhampered.

I wish those making their "balik kampong" trip back home a safe journey and pleasant holidays.

- Sinar

Delegates told to go all out for Barisan win

KUALA LUMPUR: Plum blossom, or mae hua in Chinese, which goes into full bloom at the height of winter is an analogy for a person who thrives in times of adversity.

MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said MCA members and leaders should learn from the flower in their struggle.

"Let the setback in the last elections spur you to go all out to return Barisan Nasional to victory," he told a packed San Choon Hall when opening the Selangor MCA convention at Wisma MCA here yesterday.

Describing the 13th general election as a do-or-die battle for Pakatan and Barisan, he said the people also have to decide the fate of the nation.

"It is a choice between a vibrant society and high-income nation under the Economic Transformation Program-mes put in place by our Prime Minister or a bankrupt nation under Pakatan Rakyat's rule," Dr Chua said.

He pointed out that the total cost of Pakatan's populist policies – abolish tolls (RM50bil), abolish PTPTN loans owed (RM43bil), car taxes (RM8bil) and RM93bil to ensure a minimum RM4,000 monthly household income for Malaysians – was almost equivalent to the country's total annual revenue of RM200bil; and the country would be bankrupt within two years if Pakatan took over and implemented the policies.

He said the Opposition's desperation to grab power had been compounded by Pakatan's ageing leaders; PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat was 81, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, 71, and PKR leaderDatuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, 66.

On Anwar reportedly saying that he would retreat from politics if Pakatan failed to make it to Putrajaya, Dr Chua described it as political spinning.

On MCA's stand on an Islamic state, Dr Chua said the party respects Islam as the official religion in this multi-ethnic and multi-religious country where people of other religions have freedom to practise their respective faiths.

"Religion must not be a political agenda or it will further divide the country.

"This is why our Prime Minister focusses on inclusiveness, the 1Malaysia concept, and development," he noted.

Meanwhile, Selangor MCA chairman Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai said the state MCA was ready to work with other Barisan component parties to win back Selangor.

At a separate function in Johor Baru on Friday, Dr Chua urged the people to check and analyse facts before going to the polls.

"Numbers do not lie. The stable economic growth in the country proves the current policies are working," he said at the National Teochew Association dinner.

Single mum harassed by Ah Long over debt of RM90,000

BUTTERWORTH: A single mother with three children is living in fear of nine loan sharks after she borrowed about RM90,000 to improve her furniture business.

The 46-year-old woman, who only wanted to be known as Madam Sng, said she and her husband divorced about three years ago and she had borrowed money from the moneylenders to improve her business.

"I did not think I would be harassed by them," she told a press conference organised by Bagan MCA Youth chief David Chua at the Bagan MCA headquarters in Jalan Kampung Benggali.

Sng said she had to borrow the money to run the business because two of her children were still studying.

"Despite borrowing the money, my business didn't improve as many of my clients failed to settle their dues after getting their furniture.

"As such, I had difficulties in paying back the money to the moneylenders and I had no choice but to close shop," she said.

Sng said when she was unable to pay the Ah Long, she started receiving threatening calls from them.

"To date, I have paid more than RM50,000 to all nine of them, but the interest rate is killing me as they charge me 15% every five days," she said yesterday.

Chua, who is also Bagan Barisan Nasional coordinator, called upon the Ah Long to be more considerate.

He urged them to work out a settlement to get back the principal amount by waiving the interest payment.

Chua also said Sng's clients who still owed her money should settle their dues to help her pay off her debts.

"Sng is going to start work soon and she wants to settle her debts.

"Hopefully, her former clients will come forward to pay up their dues as this will be of great help to her," he said.

Dental Act to be amended

PETALING JAYA: After four decades, the country's Dental Act is set to be amended to ensure patients' safety and health.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the proposed amendments for the Dental Act 2012 included having registration and regulation of dental therapists and provisions for the registration of dental specialists under a separate specialist division.

He said the new Act also proposed for dental nurses with diploma qualification to register as dental therapists.

They would be able to practise and carry out procedures, such as tooth extraction, in public and private sectors under the supervision of dental surgeons.

It is also proposed that the period of compulsory service for dentists be reduced from three years to two after registration under the new Act.

"Dental therapists will have their own committees to register their members and to regulate the standards of practice," he said of the Dental Bill 2012, which was targeted to be tabled in the next meeting.

They would also be able to conduct their own disciplinary proceedings and impose punishment on their members.

A dental therapists' register would also be set up and they would have representation on the Malaysian Dental Council (MDC).

Other new inclusions are to link the continuing professional development points with the renewal of practising certificates and to have a new section for enforcement to strengthen enforcement capability and capacity on the practice of dentistry.

"The amended Dental Act allows for more effective regulation of the practice of dentistry, strengthening of disciplinary procedures on dental practitioners and reviewing fees for registration, applications for practising certificates, qualifying examinations and letters of good standing," he said.

Liow added that it would also have a review of the penalties for offences against the proposed Act.

It is also proposed a technical committee for recognition of dental programmes to assess programmes for all categories of dental personnel, and recommend them to the MDC for qualification recognition.

A dental evaluation committee would also be proposed to assess recognised qualifications, set the qualifying examination for dental graduates with unrecognised qualifications, determine the requirements for the qualifying examination and determine assessment methods.

There would be a proposal for a dental specialists' qualifying committee to determine the criteria for registration of dental specialists in the Specialist division of the dental register, determine the standard of proficiency and formulate guidelines on standards of practice.

For enforcement, the proposal provision would include enabling action to be taken against unregistered persons in registered practices and unregistered individuals in unregistered premises.

Previously, the Dental Act 1971 does not allow for enforcement against unregistered dental practitioners practising in registered practices.

DAP has to urge PAS to give up their hudud law stand, or they are merely talking nonsense

19 August 2012

Press Statement by MCA Central Committee member and Deputy Chairman of MCA Publicity Bureau Sdr Loh Seng Kok

DAP has to urge PAS to give up their hudud law stand, or they are merely talking nonsense

DAP Parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang need not repeat the familiar phrase that DAP is against having PAS hudud law in Malaysia as they are merely said for self-gratification. If he really is sincere in settling DAP's differences with PAS over hudud, the solution is simple; he and DAP Secretary General Lim Guan Eng must use their influence to urge other Pakatan leaders to issue a joint statement saying that PAS has abandoned its theocratic state and hudud law agenda, and the amendment of the PAS party constitution to fit this joint statement.

Although Kit Siang has issued statements saying that PAS hudud law is not part of Pakatan's common policy, yet we still see the enforcement of certain Islamic policies such as the ban on the sale of lottery tickets and the separation of men and women in cinemas in Kelantan, as well as the demolition of the pig abbatoir and the implementation of the 50% Bumi housing quota policy in Kedah. Are all these part of Pakatan's common policy? If it is not, then why is DAP keeping silent and stepping aside quietly to allow PAS to implement these policies uninhibited?

Kelantan Menteri Besar Dato' Nik Abdul Aziz has repeatedly said that PAS seeks to fulfill its ultimate ambition of establishing a theocratic state and implementing hudud law, and not matter how many times DAP opposes them, this stand will not change. PKR de facto leader Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also implied his agreement towards having hudud law.

Thus it is painfully obvious that DAP voices its opposition towards hudud and claiming that having PAS hudud law is not part of Pakatan's common policy, in reality they are subservient to PAS. Besides that, PAS has also repeatedly said that they will not change their ambition simply because DAP opposes it. Thus to cover up this infighting, all DAP can do is to say that Pakatan parties have "agreed to disagree"

Govt low-cost flats nationwide to get spruce-up

SEREMBAN: All government low-cost flats nationwide will be spruced up beginning next month to prevent the buildings becoming eyesores.

Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Chor Chee Heungsaid the Cabinet decided on this during a recent meeting.

Authorities would carry out painting and other upgrading work at the flats under the "My Good Neighbourhood" campaign.

"Some of these blocks of flats look so run-down but there is nothing much the residents can do because they can't afford to maintain the area.

"Residents' associations are also having problems collecting as little as RM20 from the tenants every month and that is why these places have remained neglected," he said, adding that his ministry would gather information from local councils on areas that needed sprucing up.

Among the first to benefit from the project would be residents living in several blocks of flats in Lobak, near here, and in Alor Setar, Kedah.

He said RM3.8mil has been allocated for the Lobak project and RM5.6mil for the one in Alor Setar.

Chor said the programme would be carried out under the government-initiated Blue Ocean Strategy and several other ministries would be involved.

"We hope to cover as many public housing schemes as possible," he said.

Asked on the amount allocated by the Government for the programme, Chor said this would depend on the number of housing schemes identified by the local councils.

"We will work within our means and apply for the allocations accordingly," he added.

Chua: Ensure peace is not compromised

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians should constantly remind themselves that they have a role to play to ensure the country's peace and harmony is not compromised.

Nasharudin the PAS enigma

The PAS leadership is under pressure to act against its former No 2 Nasharudin Mat Isa who accompanied the Prime Minister to an exclusive meeting with top Saudi ulama in Mecca.

IT is guaranteed that PAS politician Nasharudin Mat Isa will be a top conversation topic among PAS circles this Hari Raya.

There has been intense speculation about him ever since that photograph of him seated Arab-style next to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak with two of Mecca's most prominent religious personalities was published in the local media.

It was one of those pictures that told a thousand words – Nasharudin seated somewhat deferentially to Najib's right as the Prime Minister chatted with the two Saudi ulama amid plush velvet cushions and carpets.

If Nasharudin was an Umno politician, he would be seen as a man with a very bright future. But since he is from PAS, it probably means he is going to be in hot water with his party.

The picture sent shockwaves through PAS circles and there have been all sorts of theories about how the Bachok MP and former PAS No 2 got into such a cosy situation with the country's No 1.

Nasharudin, who is also the Malaysian co-chairman of the pro-Palestine Al-Quds Foundation, was said to be part of the delegation that was in Mecca in connection with the Extraordinary Summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) that eventually suspended Syria's membership in the group.

But how he ended up in that rather exclusive session was apparently quite impromptu.

The session between Najib and the Saudi ulama took place on the sidelines of the OIC meeting.

It was arranged by Nasharudin who is part of the international Islamic network thanks to his years in PAS and his proficiency in Arabic.

What happened was that the ever-punctual Najib had arrived at the appointed time for the meeting.

It took place in the penthouse suite located within Mecca's most prestigious address – the Makka Royal Hotel Clock Tower which is a glittering complex of hotels and shops overlooking the revered Kaabah.

Religious Affairs Minister Datuk Jamil Khir Baharom, who was supposed to join the meeting as the translator, was still on the way and that was how Nasharudin, who speaks fluent Arabic, was roped in as the translator.

"We were just as surprised, it was purely coincidental. Call it divine intervention if you like," said one Malaysian official.

The chorus of calls from PAS to discipline and even to sack Nasharudin is growing louder.

He has been accused of being an agent of Umno and the party has been left red-faced and at a loss to explain his actions.

When former deputy minister Datuk Lajim Ukin called on Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat in Kelantan before jumping from the Umno ship, Pakatan Rakyat leaders and supporters had clapped and cheered him on. But no one is cheering now that the same thing is happening in PAS. Nobody likes the taste of their own medicine.

Nasharudin, better known as Ustaz Nasha among reporters, has been on a collision course with his party's leadership since losing his deputy president's post to Mohamad Sabu two years ago.

He was recently removed as head of the international bureau and dropped as a member of the party's central committee because he had not attended a single meeting since his appointment and had ignored inquiries about his absenteeism.

PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali said that Nasharudin could still appeal against the decision and that he remained a member of the powerful Syurah Council which comprises the party's top ulama.

But sources said that Nasharudin actually enjoys support from a number of the party's top ulama who, like him, are not comfortable with PAS' direction since 2008.

This conservative group believes Nasharudin is not against the party; they say he is only against the liberals or Erdogans who have caused PAS to veer from its Islamic agenda.

Nasharudin thinks that PAS is too subservient to DAP and he was at Datuk Dr Hasan Ali's side when the party sacked him for pushing the Islamic agenda in Selangor.

He has also been vocal against the LGBT or the lesbian-gay-bisexual-transsexual movement, he advocates the unity of the ummah and has even offered his house as the venue for a muzakarah between PAS and Umno.

Two months ago, the Malay papers went to town with pictures of Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin attending the wedding of Nasharudin's eldest daughter.

Other Umno guests included Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim, Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz and Khairy Jamaluddin.

It is quite normal to see both sides of the divide at a wedding but PAS people saw it as yet another instance of Nasharudin getting too friendly with Umno leaders.

To rub salt into injury, he told TV3 during his Mecca stay that PAS grassroots are worried about the party's collaboration with DAP given its anti-hudud thinking and urged the PAS leadership to take a stand before the general election.

Nasharudin has become a rogue politician in his party.

He told reporters waiting at the KLIA when he flew in from Saudi Arabia on Thursday that he was not resigning from PAS. Many think he is challenging PAS to sack him.

Nasharudin has never been an easy person to read.

He is one of the more gregarious leaders in PAS, he seems eternally chirpy and is always smiling.

The only occasion when he looked crushed was when he lost his deputy president's post.

He left the venue early and did not bother to attend the final day of the party's muktamar.

Some think he is preparing to burn his bridges with PAS. Others say the bridge has burnt down.

Menteri Dalam Negeri, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein (gambar) mengumumkan pembebasan 12 tahanan Akta Keselamatan Dalam Negeri (ISA) dari Kem Tahanan Kamunting, Taiping, Perak semalam.

End of the road for China’s serial killer

Zhou Kehua went on a killing and robbery spree before he was tracked down by police and killed in a shootout.

FOLLOWING the death of serial killer Zhou Kehua, who was gunned down by the police during a shootout in Chongqing, the focus has now shifted to his 20-year-old girlfriend who may hold the key to solving the mystery of the case.

Zhang Guiying was one of the few people whom the killer contacted before and after he killed his victims.

The police said they had detained Zhang to assist in their investigations and to answer questions like: Where is the loot robbed by Zhou? What was Zhou's motive for killing?

At about 6.45am on Tuesday, Zhou walked into an alley near a shoe factory in the Shapingba district when he discovered that he was being tailed by someone. Behind him was a vegetable seller who suspected that the man in front of him could have been the murderer on the wanted posters on the alley walls.

When Zhou turned around and walked towards him, the vegetable seller saw a gun in his waistband and fled. Then, he heard gunshots.

Plainclothes officers Zhou Jin and Wang Xiaoyu were quoted by local press as saying that they fired two shots each at Zhou Kehua in retaliation after he shot at them.

"I hid behind an electrical pole while my partner Wang leaned against the wall. One of the gunshots hit the pole and another hit the ground and ricocheted onto Wang's ankle," Zhou Jin said.

The two officers had trailed Zhou Kehua for a while after receiving a lead that he would appear in the area. They found him dead after the shootout.

The Chongqing police said that the night before, Zhou contacted Zhang and told her that he did not manage to rob too much money on Aug 10 and he would "do something big again" on Tuesday.

According to a report in Yangtse Evening News, Zhou and Zhang met at a hair salon where she worked following the infamous Jan 6 robbery in which Zhou grabbed 200,000 yuan (RM96,000) from a company's employee who had come out of a bank in Nanjing before killing him.

Apparently, Zhou gave Zhang the money that he robbed from the bank and told her about his previous robbery and murder plots.

Zhang worshipped her boyfriend and asked for more money from his latest crimes in Chongqing.

On Aug 10, it was reported that Zhou robbed 70,000 yuan (RM33,600) from a woman who withdrew money from a Bank of China branch in Chongqing, causing two deaths and injuring another.

Previously, Zhou only used ID phone cards to contact his family from public telephone booths.

But since developing a relationship with Zhang, he had used a mobile phone to get in touch with her and this enabled the police to track him down.

Zhou became one of China's most wanted crime suspects after killing 10 people during robberies in Jiangsu and Hunan provinces and Chongqing municipality over the last eight years.

Police said the 42-year-old Chongqing native carefully plotted each attempt using the diversion tactic and disguising himself whenever he committed the crimes.

He was first found in the possession of guns in Hubei province's Wuhan city in 1993 and later in Kunming, Yunnan province, in 2005. He spent two stints in prison for the offences.

His ex-wife described him as someone who loved guns very much. He often carried guns around and cleaned them whenever he was free, she said.

A resident was rewarded 600,000 yuan (RM288,000) for tipping off the police in the hunt of the most-wanted man.

The young woman reported the sighting of Zhou while shopping with her boyfriend in the Jiangbei district in Chongqing on Aug 11.

She said they followed Zhou into a shopping mall but when he discovered that someone was tailing him he turned around and stared at them.

She added that they hid in a restaurant and informed the police of the suspect. The police rushed to the mall but failed to capture him.

However, after examining surveillance images in the area, the police identified the man as Zhou with the help of his ex-wife.

Following his capture, the police found two movie tickets among Zhou's personal belongings and this suggested that he might have planned to watch the science-fiction film Lockout and spy film The Silent War on Aug 12 and Aug 13 at a cinema located less than 5km from the Bank of China branch where he committed the crime on Aug 10.

The police are still looking for the estimated 555,000 yuan (RM266,400) that he stole and robbed over the years and a rifle he took from a security guard whom he murdered at a military barracks in 2009.

- UM

Janji Bersih, Janji Kecoh, Janji Menang

August 18, 2012   ·   0 Comments

janji_kecoh

Memang mereka plan nak buat kecoh pun.
