Cerita Lynas Dan Orang PAS Kuantan…

Dukeofmontecristo

Selamba mereka berkata, "kena buatlah…macam tu lah perang politik!". Sekali lagi saya geleng-gelengkan kepala. Dalam hati saya berkata, "lantak hang la labu…".

Singapore Intelligence Is Losing Grip Over Anwar’s Sex Video?

The most controversial website, Wikileaks, once exposed an 'unsurprising but jaw-dropping' news that Singapore's intelligence services and (Singaporean elder statesman) Lee Kuan Yew have told Australia's Office of National Assessments (ONA) in their exchanges, that Malaysian's opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim, did indeed commit the acts for which he is currently indicted.

The statement was based on "technical intelligence", which is likely to relate to intercepted communications. It was then reported that ONA assessed, and their Singapore counterparts concurred, 'it was a set up job and Anwar probably knew that, but walked into it anyway".

Despite Anwar's sexual orientation and may be 'addiction', being a public knowledge, Anwar somehow escaped indictment of sodomizing Saiful Bukhari earlier this year.

But there is no relieving for Anwar just yet. Recently, the stories about his gay-sex video involving a good looking 'counterpart' that is in the hands of the Singapore Intelligence, is being revisited and is all over the internet. It's true that the upcoming election may be the cause of this revisiting process, but that doesn't mean that the 'story' is 'spoiled' or untrue.

Sources reported that tensions and desperation is heightening in Anwar's team although the video has yet to be uploaded on the internet.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that the video is kept by Singapore Intelligence for 'future use'. Singapore has been a lifelong nemesis of Malaysia, and Lee Kwan Yew will not rest in peace should he kick the bucket before he could see his Chinese brothers from DAP rule! d Malays ia.

Anwar, is said to be the best chance for Singapore to achieve its dream to broaden its border in the north. So, it makes perfect sense why Singapore must get involved in BERSIH and Anti-Lynas rally and even train their people to interfere in Malaysia's General Election.

Singapore needs to put Anwar on the throne so that they can strip Anwar off his pants and tie his balls on a string. Anwar will then be their most obedient dog which will let go of the throne when the time is right for DAP to take over.

But I personally think that with their strategy already a known subject to all Malaysians, it would be almost foolish for Singapore or DAP to pursue their plans.

Videos of Anwar's sexual activities – be it natural or unnatural, can no longer be considered as an effective tool to control him. In Malaysia, those who support Anwar will support him any way and will brush off all the negative pictures of him without second thought while those who don't support Anwar need no more evidence to convince them of his guilt.

Moreover, Anwar's party is also dying fast for its lack of leadership and incompetency. With an unending internal battle, the party may not even live long enough to face the election in one piece.

Nevertheless, it is an interest of the people to judge further of Anwar's 'gift' or 'capabilities'. At the same time we can never deny that there will always be the fence-sitters. Therefore, to get hold of this sex video would be a bonus for Malaysia.

Well, Malaysians may hold their breath and Anwar may wish that he stopped breathing now because we have reasons to believe that the video is slipping away from Singapore's grip and might just land right on the internet at a perfect time just before the election.

A tradition to inspire

THE Chinese should pass on their traditions to future generations so the community's culture would continue to thrive.

Bukit Gelugor Barisan Nasional coordinator Datuk Koay Kar Huah said for example, the Chinese should understand the reason behind the dumpling or Chang Festival.

"Tasty glutinous rice dumpling (chang or zong zi) is eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival (Duan Wu Jie) which falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in the Chinese calendar.

"The Duan Wu Jie is to commemorate Chinese poet Qu Yuan, who had drowned himself in protest against the ruler and corrupt practices in China more than 1,000 years ago," Koay said.

It is said that the people threw rice dumplings into the river to prevent fish from eating his remains while the beating of drums during the Dragon Boat Festival was to frighten the fish away.

Sticky feast: Taman Tun Sardon residents enjoying dumpling samplings during the Chang Festival and Fathers Day event in their area in Penang

Koay said the Chang Festival also teaches the community to be patriotic.

"Qu Yuan was a patriot and loyal to the Emperor. However, his advice fell on deaf ears.

"There is so much that the community can learn from our Chinese culture," Koay told reporters during the Chang Festival and Fathers Day event in Taman Tun Sardon, Penang.

The recent event was organised by the Bukit Gelugor MCA division with support from the Wanita wing and the Taman Gembira MCA branch.

Some 1,500 dumplings were given out to about 220 families in the area.

Businessman Hee Cheap Fong, 48, said it was nice that Fathers Day last Sunday and the Chang Festival tomorrow fall within the same month.

"Usually, my family would make our own dumplings but this year, we could not do so due to our busy schedule,'' he said.

His daughter Hee Jing Xi, nine, said her favourite dumpling is the kee chang.

The kee chang is yellow because it is prepared with lye water (aqueous sodium carbonate) and is normally consumed with sweet bean paste or light syrup.

Also present at the event were Bukit Gelugor MCA division deputy chief Loh Nam Hooi and Air Itam Barisan coordinator Jackson Teoh.

Learning so much more from the students

The writer finds it reassuring that students uphold democratic values and peace, even when in disagreement.

STRANGELY I've been receiving unprecedented numbers of invites to give speeches this year, and I try to say "yes" to as many as possible.

So far, two have been in legislative buildings (the Penang State Legislative Assembly and the Dewan Negara), two in hotel ballrooms, one in the august Treaty Room of the former Wisma Putra (now the Institute for Diplomacy and Foreign Relations), one in a hospital, and of course one at Memorial Tunku Abdul Rahman.

But it is institutions of learning that provide the most opportunities for me to interact with Malaysians I might otherwise never meet.

These have included SMK Tuanku Muhammad Kuala Pilah, MRSM Kepala Batas, Cempaka Cheras, Tunku Kurshiah College, UCSI University, Inti College, Segi College, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Sunway University, SK Tunku Kurshiah, SK Kuala Pilah, Ican College, Universiti Teknologi Mara and the Malay College Kuala Kangsar.

I am grateful for the incentive these opportunities provide in forcing one to become a better speechwriter and public speaker, but even more educational for me are the chats I have with students, teachers and principals afterwards.

In the end I feel that I've learnt so much more from them, than what I have to offer them. And the chance to visit so many different types of schools in different locations gives one the chance to piece together the convoluted landscape of education in Malaysia.

Last week, UiTM's Faculty of Education (which trains teachers who will be sent to government schools) asked me to share what I thought would be the "ideal curriculum for the growth of future leaders in Malaysia".

Naturally I extolled the virtues of more devolution of power to headmasters and parent-teacher associations, more setting amongst pupils while abolishing the persistent and false dichotomy between the arts and sciences, a massive increase in extra-curricular activities, and the urgent rehabilitation of the history syllabus.

Before the event I had been warned that since UiTM is a bumiputra-only university which has been the focus of some political fanfare, I might face some opposition to my ideas.

So it was somewhat of a surprise when, in the question and answer session, our future educators chorused a medley of questions so radical that I thought we might all get into trouble!

One less controversial complaint was the propensity of being posted to places they didn't want to go to.

The usual justification for this practice is that no one would voluntarily teach in a rural school, and so they must be forced to do so — but a show of hands revealed a good dozen who said they'd love to. (Another initiative that refutes this theory is Teach for Malaysia.)

This week I spoke at MCKK's 5th Youth Development Summit. What was particularly interesting here was the inclusion of participants from six other countries: Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei, the Philippines, India and Pakistan.

The topic was the role of schools in promoting world peace, and I argued that the values of democracy — respect for fellow human beings, tolerance of other beliefs, the merits of competition, the virtues of market economics — must be inculcated in schools so that students grow up to be citizens in countries that would thence veer towards becoming constitutional democracies with check and balance institutions to protect against absolutism.

In the ensuing dialogue, a young chap from Lahore's Aitchison College (founded 19 years before MCKK) queried my faith in democracy — understandably so, given his country's political history since independence.

Famously, many Indians too admire examples of strong, long-serving leaders able to force through a vision and agenda unhampered by too much democracy.

My reply was that relying on the so-called "benevolent dictator" (and then only for those who agree with that dictator) can be risky if they become less benevolent, or if their successors are tyrants, and check and balance institutions have been eroded, destroyed or compromised to the extent that they cannot perform their roles anymore.

The other questions revealed an impressive knowledge of world politics, but most reassuring of all, an affinity with democratic values and almost overenthusiastic statements in support of peace, even when in disagreement.

I have always preferred writing over speaking, but one challenge I find in both is including enough to be clear but omitting enough to be concise.

Unfortunately this balance is sometimes misjudged, and incorrect conclusions are drawn as a result.

As such, I try to bring compilations of my previous articles (Abiding Times and the recently-published Abiding Times 2) along when I give speeches, and I am happy to offer copies to occasional readers of this column too.

> Tunku 'Abidin Muhriz is president of Ideas.

Letak Jawatan: Rafizi Minta Anwar Pujuk Tu..

Mengusik Rafizi sama seperti mengusik Anwar, mengusik Anwar, faham-faham sajalah.

Even Azmin pun difahamkan tak berani mengusik Rafizi, cakap-cakap belakang bolehlah – itupun bisik-bisik.

Psikologi menawan hati lelaki lembut ni bukan susah sangat pun, maklum, dia bukan perempuan sejati, hajat-hajat nak jadi perempuan sahaja.

Nanti Anwar tepuk mana bahagian yang patut-patut, eloklah Rafizi tu....

Imposing gag orders on state representatives is akin to sidelining the people’s views

22 June 2012

Press statement by MCA Penang secretary Sdr Lau Chiek Tuan

Imposing gag orders on state representatives is akin to sidelining the people's views

I urge Penang DAP to not persecute and oppress their party representatives who do not fall in line with their leader's stand by imposing gag orders or taking disciplinary action against them as such acts are akin to dictatorship. As a state assemblyman, Teh Yee Cheu has a responsibility towards his constituents in Tanjung Bungah. Thus it is only right for him to continue raising the issue of hill slope development.

This shows that even within DAP, a few of its members are aware that their party's leadership does not really care for the people but are only after their own personal goals, and that there is a severe lack of 'democracy' within a party which claims to stand for democracy.

What Teh Yee Cheu is doing constitutes a check-and-balance system which will prevent the Penang state government from taking advantage of the people, and any attempts to gag him now will destroy that system. What use do the people have for an assemblyman who is unable to voice out their interests?

It is sad that the other so-called representatives of the people have decided to keep quiet over the over-development of Penang as they are too afraid to invoke the wrath of their party leaders. Obviously DAP's authoritarian style of leadership has rendered them ineffective to serve as the people's representative.

Thus once more I urge DAP and other opposition parties to stop being arrogant and to humble themselves and to learn to accept criticism and realize that they can no longer ride the wave of popularity which brought them victory during the 12th General Election. DAP must now realize that they must be held accountable for their actions.

Penang MCA Secretary

Education, GE preparation discussed at MCA Youth Central Committee meeting

MCA HQ, 22 Jun – Regarding preparations for the upcoming general elections, the MCA Youth Central Committee meeting today had discussed on using the upcoming MCA Youth state annual general meetings (AGM) as a platform for cadre training to be delegates.

MCA Youth National Chairman Datuk Dr Ir Wee Ka Siong also explained that this will be their warm-up campaign for the party's youth wing to ensure that all their members have the proper information and are equipped to face the elections.

MCA Youth urges government to look after PSD scholarships recipients

Ka Siong also said that the meeting expressed concern over the 55 Public Service Scholarship (PSD) recipients last year who were sent to University College Sedaya International (UCSI) to study medicine as they were allegedly given verbal notification that there might not be enough place for all 55 of them. "MCA Youth urges the government, especially the PSD, to clarify with UCSI so that there will be enough places for all 55 scholarship recipients," he said.

Countering baseless claims over education

The meeting also discussed on the allegations hurled by Dong Zong towards MCA, and Ka Siong explained that MCA Youth central committee members are now better informed on the issue and on what MCA has done for education and the Chinese community.

"MCA is going towards a better tomorrow, we want to build a better future for education," he explained further.

On the allegations that vernacular schools will further separate the country, Ka Siong said people are entitled to their own view and that MCA will continue to do what they felt was right for the country. "MCA's stand is constant. We will do what we believe is in the best interest of the country," he clarified.

MoE to look into suspension of straight-A student

The Youth wing chairman, who also holds the position of Deputy Minister of Education, also touched on the issue whereby a student of Methodist Girls' Secondary School in Melaka was suspended for a week for wearing a mini skirt to an event outside of school grounds.

"I have asked the state education department to give me a full report, on what is the basis for the suspension," said Ka Siong, adding that as far as the ministry was concerned, when someone steps into a school compound they must follow regulations.

"If it is outside, I do not think that we can take any action just based on one photograph," clarified Ka Siong. "If we want to penalize someone, there must be justification for it. We also need to educate them on what we are trying to teach them," he added further.

GEMPAR BERAPI! MELAYU SUNGAI KOB SETARAF BABI!!!

Akhirnya, dua orang pekerja Prestavest cedera. Seorang pekerja India, koyak pipi manakala seorang lagi pekerja Cina lebam matanya.

Chin Peng Tenat: Mat Sabu Tak Melawat “Wira”nya Di Bangkok?

June 22, 2012   ·   2 Comments

mat sabun

Selamba mereka berkata, "kena buatlah…macam tu lah perang politik!". Sekali lagi saya geleng-gelengkan kepala. Dalam hati saya berkata, "lantak hang la labu…".

Perang Besar Dalam PKR Rebut Kuasa… Rakyat Selangor Jadi Mangsa

-MediaUMNO

SINGAPURA MASUK CAMPUR POLITIK MALAYSIA KERANA VIDEO ANWAR !

Video Seks Anwar Terlepas Dari Simpanan Perisikan Singapura?

UTUSAN

Anwar is accountable the people; DAP maintains “silence is golden” rule to shield ally

22 June 2012

Press statement by MCA National Organising Secretary Datuk Tee Siew Kiong

Anwar is accountable the people; DAP maintains "silence is golden" rule to shield ally

I urge Opposition leader Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim to come clean on accusations that he owns 20 master accounts worth RM3billion. If he is not involved in the allegations, then the PKR ketua umum should lodge a police report and come clear to the people.

Meanwhile, DAP should express its position on this allegation against Anwar, and persuade Anwar to be accountable to the rakyat. DAP cannot remain silent to shield its leaders.

Had a Barisan Nasional leader be similarly accused of amassing such funds, DAP will instantly criticise BN and fuel speculation and take a holier-than-thou stand against corruption. But now the situation has reversed. Since this allegation involves DAP's ally, the Rocket opts to turn a blind eye. This is a case of double standards. MACC should take an interest on how Anwar is alleged to have 20 master accounts with RM3billion.

Irrespective of political affiliation, when there is suspicion of graft, DAP can no longer play favouritism if the suspicion falls on one's own member. The public is keep to determine how Anwar had access to such enormous sources of income?

If Anwar is indeed innocent, he should not be alarmed if MACC begins a probe. The Rocket should not feign apathy or ignorance on this issue as Anwar is in the same political pact.

The Inland Revenue Board and MACC should commence an investigation into the unknown sources of Anwar's purported wealth as the amount mentioned is not tiny. It is also Anwar's responsibility to clarify the facts to the rakyat.

State Assemblyman for Pulai Sebatang

Nurul’s defective radar, again

Lembah Pantai MP AND PKR Vice President Nurul Izzah Anwar's defective radar systems and poor information gathering about to land her in the same spot she continuously gets herself over and over again into; her foot in her poisonous big mouth. Together, rogue news portal Malaysiakini which perpetuated Nurul's lies.

Her charge that Advanced Air Traffic System Sdn. Bhd. (AAT) is the joint venture company between Selex Sistemi Integrati SpA (SELEX) and Tirai Variasi Sdn. Bhd. is defective. She also claimed that AAT secured a RM 128 million or Euro 26 million contract for SELEX via direct negotiations, which  is not true either. SELEX did get the RM128.4 million contract was awarded by the Federal Government to SELEX in 2009 and not to AAT as reported.

SELEX was the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for the original system that was installed in 1994. This project is an upgraded project and therefore needed to use the same system and the same OEM. The RM128.4 million contract was not solely to install Air Traffic Control system in Subang.  The contract is for upgrading works for radar and system covering many airports in Semenanjung Malaysia and airports in Sabah and Sarawak. AAT was one of many Malaysian vendors supporting this project.

In a statement of clarification, AAT was never involved in the contract negotiation between SELEX and Federal Government. AAT's role is to provide installation works and technical assistance for the project. The value of AAT's contract is approximately RM9 million over 3 years period from 2009 to 2012, which effectively is RM 3 million per annum.

In the Malaysiakini report, it stated that AAT was formed in 1994 "With the aim of know-how and technology transfer to Malaysia, especially in the air traffic control systems field". The report is actually an addendum of the manipulation of facts by Nurul and her cohort of consistently lying PKR colleagues, is designed to rubbish former Ambassador to the United States of America Dato' Seri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis via his son Ikhwan Hafiz Jamaluddin.

Fact is that Ikhwan Hafiz, 25, sits in the board of AAT. However in 2009 when Federal Government awarded the RM 128 million to SELEX, it is most likely that Ikhwan Nasir was still slogging buried into his books and laboratory experiment reports as a student in highly regarded world renown London Imperial College of Science and Technology. He could not have been a party to 'any direct negotiations' between SELEX and the Federal Government, with or without AAT's involvement because he had not come onboard the latter yet.

Penang Chief Minister looking through the periscope of KD Tun Razak in a dive 50 nautical miles west of Langkawi 9 Dec 2011

This is typical of politically bankrupt cohort of PKR lying politicians, where Nurul has her fair share in committing a blatant lie against the Malaysian Armed Forces based on a reply in Parliament which has been taken totally out of context and manipulated. The Lembah Pantai MP's statement to Jakarta-based Kompass on 5 August 2010 claimed that the Perdana Menteri Class Scorpene submarines are defective and unable to dive. It was proven wrong not only with several diving missions carrying His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang DiPertuan Agong and HRH Sultan of Selangor, but also DAP Secretary General and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng on his dive onboard KD Tun Razak 50 nautical miles west of Langkawi on 9 December 2011.

It is clear that PKR Vice President Nurul and the cohort of political liars needed to have 'dramas', to make them politically relevant and trying to deflect the attention from the reality that truly they are politically-bankrupt elected representatives who failed to serve their consitutuencies.

Time to move the cops, again

Car parks and traffic junction robberies must be stopped immediately.

THE success of the Government's efforts to combat street crime will come to naught if nothing is done on the recent spate of high-profile cases that give the impression that traffic light junctions and car parks at shopping complexes are crime-infested areas.

It cannot be denied that there had been several high-profile crimes in the past couple of weeks that have struck fear among the people, especially those living in the Klang Valley.

There was the botched abduction at a mall in Mutiara Damansara where the brave young lady managed to jump out of the car after the crooks had grabbed her at the car park.

Then there was the other robbery at the car park at a shopping complex in the golden triangle in Kuala Lumpur where the victim was attacked by two guys with a knife.

Of course, there was the kidnapping of Dutch boy Nayati Moodliar who was taken just a few hundred metres from his home as he was walking to school in the posh upscale area of Mont Kiara.

All three cases received not only wide media coverage but more importantly, went viral on the Internet.

It also got many people to open up to discuss this issue of crime – a highly sensitive subject with most – and gave the impression that crime is on the rise.

The victims of all three cases used Facebook to highlight their plight. Nayati's family even ended up negotiating the ransom payment via FB messaging.

The two women who were robbed at the car parks were online "experts" as one is an Internet marketeer and the other is working with an e-solutions firm. They used their cyber skills to tell the world how they became victims of vicious robbers.

Internet marketeer Chin Xin-Ci, 25, was almost abducted by two men at a basement car park of the mall.

After she escaped and recovered, she related the incident on her Facebook page and her some 13,000 fans made sure it went viral. Chin was a very attractive woman, after all.

It didn't help that less than 24 hours after Chin's incident, two women were robbed of RM80,000 at the same place.

The other victim at the mall in Kuala Lumpur, went one step further.

She put lots of photograph of herself, showing her bandaged arms, on her Facebook page. Being a business development manager for a solutions company, she knew what to do.

She broke all convention by revealing her name and face. She was not afraid to tell her attackers and the management of the car park what she thought of them.

Car park crimes have become extra sensitive in Malaysia after the Canny Ong case in Bangsar. The mystery and horrific murder of such a pretty young woman left many Malaysians angry.

Such anger has no doubt returned with the latest car park attacks. Women groups and even the police are now issuing safety advisories on how to handle such situations.

In fact, I have received several e-mails from friends saying how they would not permit their wives and daughters to go to shopping centres on their own.

Then there were also a slew of robberies at busy traffic light junctions where the robbers would ride past in a motorcycle and smash a car window to grab a woman's handbag on the passenger seat.

Such robberies are just like snatch thieves and these crooks choose heavily jammed junctions as their place of attack because their victims are trapped and no one can give chase.

In the past couple of weeks, two of my friends fell victims to such robberies. When they reported the matter to the police, they were told that the place where they had been attacked was a common place for such crime.

Four years ago, when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak singled out reducing street crime as one of his priorities, Pemandu identified a way of doing so – by redeploying underutilised police personnel to "hot" crime zones.

It worked because the mere presence of uniformed policemen frightened off would-be criminals like snatch thieves from the area.

The time has come for Pemandu to do the same for car parks and traffic light junctions. Catching these type of crooks must be made a priority. It would not take too many policemen.

Stationing two policemen – both in uniform on motorcycles – at each of these junctions will not be too taxing on the force and would be very effective in cutting down such public crimes.

Mall car park robberies can easily be stopped by making the mall and parking management take the responsibility for the security of their visitors and tenants.

More mall cops should be placed at the car parks to ensure security. Putting up as many CCTVs as possible and brightening the car park area will also provide a sense of security for the public.

All these are easily done and the cost will be minimal compared to having to carry out PR campaigns to repair damaged reputations because the last thing any mall wants is to be known as a dangerous place.

> Executive editor Wong Sai Wan makes sure he is on alert at all malls and traffic light junctions.

Upholding the course of justice

To discharge its duty to inform the public on the law, the Malaysian Bar has to say what needs to be said.

MY father is a lawyer. He has been for 35 years. Growing up, he was – and still is – a stern yet exceptionally fair man. He praises me when I do something good. He scolds me when I do something wrong. He favours neither me nor my brother. And I admire him for it. At work, I am told by his staff that he is just like that, too.

I took up law and came into contact with the concept of "independence". The concept reminded me of him. So, on one summer holiday at home from law school, I asked him: "Dad, why are you so fair?"

His response was: "I am a lawyer. It is ingrained in me to speak without fear or favour. I will praise when an action is praiseworthy. I will criticise when an action requires me to do so; even against my own sons."

It was only much later that I realised that my father lives by Section 42(1)(a) of the Legal Profession Act 1976 ("the Act"), which states that the purpose of the Malaysian Bar (and by virtue of that, all Malaysian lawyers) shall be to uphold the cause of justice without regard to its own interests or that of its members. Section 42 was his creed.

The fact that it is entrenched as statute makes its bearing all the more paramount. For justice, it states. And in so doing, the Act further determines that the Malaysian Bar is to protect and assist the public in all matters touching ancillary or incidental to the law [Section 42(1)(l)].

This sets the Malaysian Bar apart from doctors, dentists, architects, and accountants. Lawyers not only have the usual duties of care to the client, themselves and to the Court, but lawyers have an extraordinary statutory duty to protect the public in all matters of the law.

This means that the Malaysian Bar, its lawyers and, therefore,,my father and myself, have a duty to inform the public on how the law is and how it ought to be.

The significance of this is two-fold. One, the Bar Council, as the representative body of the Malaysian Bar, is not just tasked to take care of lawyers (i.e. all internal welfare and administrative matters) but must also "inform the public" – an external task. Two, this statutory duty will inevitably find the Bar Council at odds with any powers that be. Such is the destiny conferred to it by Parliament.

But more importantly, in order to discharge this duty, the Malaysian Bar must be able to state what it must. It must say it independently, fearlessly and without favour. It is unfortunate that the brunt of it will be against proposed laws. And unfortunately, proposed laws will always be made by the government of the day. It is only by this mode will the Bar Council, acting for lawyers as a whole, effectively "inform the public" on what the law ought to be – thereby protecting them.

Indeed, it has been said that in recent times such independence does not exist. Perhaps, but the solution is simple. Vote the current Bar Council out at the next elections. The ballot papers should be inked and posted, not torn and wasted. Exercise your votes, my learned friends – that is your solution. Be active, not passive.

Nevertheless, I remain confident that whoever the 36 members of the Council are, the Bar Council and the Malaysian Bar must and will remain independent. Such is the nature of our training and such is the nature of our creed. If they are not, the Act has mechanisms in place to deal with it.

However, any usurpation of this independence and purposes of the Malaysian Bar must be viewed abhorrently. The recent proposal for a law academy has the potential to be viewed in such a light. This is made especially true since there has been no single consistent authority on what this law academy's functions and objectives are.

To this young lawyer's mind, the law academy's functions and objectives must be clearly defined and must not encroach into the purposes of the Malaysian Bar as envisaged in the Act. For starters, the law academy must not seek to regulate the profession, nor must it seek practising lawyers as compulsory members. Doing so destroys the fabric of independence that was envisaged in the Act and in turn, jeopardises the legal system as a whole.

This was recognised by Sir Sydney Kentridge QC of South Africa's Steven Biko inquest fame. He said: "It is well understood that to remove the control of the profession from the... Bar Council... would have meant the end of the independence of the profession."

Justice McIntyre in Andrews Case (1989) 1 SCR 143 stated: "... in the absence of an independent legal profession ... to play its part in the administration of justice and the judicial process, the whole legal system would be in parlous state ... these powers and duties are vital to the maintenance of order in our society and the due administration of the law in the interest of the whole community."

In addition, if the law academy is given a duty to "inform the public" also, it is easy to imagine a scenario where Bar Council states "A" but the law academy states "B". In such a situation, the loser is the now-very-confused public on what the law is and what the law should be. This further delineates our law and legal system. This confusion must be avoided at all costs.

I cannot encompass all issues on the independence of the Bar and the pros and cons of the proposed law academy. Instead, I urge readers to join the National Young Lawyers Committee at 10am tomorrow at the Bar Council for its Siri Pemikiran Kritis forum titled "Alternative Bar, Alternative Future".

One thing is certain: the Malaysian Bar must remain independent. Always.

Need for strong family institution

LABIS: A strong family institution is vital in building a successful nation.

Agriculture and Agro-based Industry deputy minister Datuk Chua Tee Yong believes a solid family would impact the nation's socio-economy and its future development.

"While the government focuses on developing the country, it does not forget the family, youth, education and other social development.

"A strong family institution will positively impact the nation's development," he said before opening the family day celebration organised by Women, Family and Community Development ministry at Bekok community hall here recently.

All in tradition: Chua (centre) posing with housewives dressed in traditional costums during the family day celebration at Bekok.

Oppositions criticised everything that the government does, however, Barisan Nasional has showed a strong track record since the country's independence day, Chua said.

The overall areas such as people's lifespan, health, education and economy have improved steadily since the last 50 years, he added.

"The success result has allowed the government to widen its focus and further enhance the welfare aspect of the people by providing various subsidies.

"The 1Malaysia People's Aid payment to help families with a household income of RM3,000 and below is the latest support by the government to help reduce the burden of the people," he said.

Chua added that some countries facing economic crisis also saw more broken family problems, where studies showed that economic and financial challenges, were the main reasons that led to divorce.

Chua appealed to the people to vote wisely and exercise their right to elect their future leaders who could ensure a good future for them and their children.

Rafizi Hidu Kelemahan Anwar,Katanya Tengik!
